Charles Carroll IV, MD

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Carroll completed his undergraduate work at Williams College in American Studies. He received his medical doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD in 1982. Dr. Carroll completed his internship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and his General Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery residencies at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD in 1987. Other postgraduate training includes a fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at The Indiana Hand Center and Indiana University in Indianapolis, IN, finishing in 1988. Dr. Carroll was taught microsurgery at the University of Louisville, KY with Robert Acland MD. He spent a month studying Shoulder Surgery in August 1988 under Richard Hawkins MD at the University of Western Ontario. He continues taking and teaching advanced post-graduate residents, courses and seminars. He has also obtained Executive Eductation in Finance, Operations and Technology fom the Kellogg School of Business of the Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. He continues to be active in Ethics Education and is a Coordinator for Ethics for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He served as the Chief of Orthopedics at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital during Operation Desert Storm as a member of the United States Navy as a reservist. He completed his sevice as a Commander in 2001.
Dr. Carroll practiced for 31 years prior to moving to Virginia at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. He had a busy Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. He developed an expertise in work related injuries and care. He has numerous publications and lectures. He remains active in the acacdemic world and continues his relationship with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. He has established a relationship with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Virginia. He presently leads the team for Continuing Medical Education for the UVA Community Hospitals as a medical executive function.
He is married to his wife Bean, of 40 years with 3 grown children and 5 grandchildren. He enjoys outdoor activities, reading, riding and his busy family and labrador retrievers.
